Abduction for (Non-Omniscient) Agents

چکیده
Among the non-monotonic reasoning processes, abduction is one of the most important. Usually described as the process of looking for explanations, it has been recognized as one of the most commonly used in our daily activities. Still, the traditional definitions of an abductive problem and an abductive solution mention only theories and formulas, leaving agency out of the picture. Our work proposes a study of abductive reasoning from an epistemic anddynamicperspective, making special emphasis onnon-ideal agents. We begin by exploring what an abductive problem is in terms of an agent’s information, and what an abductive solution is in terms of the actions that modify it. Then we explore the different kinds of abductive problems and abductive solutions that arise when we consider agents whose information is not closed under logical consequence, and agents whose reasoning abilities are not complete. 1 Abductive reasoning Beyond the obvious facts that he has at some time done manual labour, that he takes snuff, that he is a Freemason, that he has been in China, and that he has done a considerable amount of writing lately, I can [get] nothing else. Sherlock Holmes The Red-Headed League Among the non-monotonic reasoning processes, abduction [1] is one of the most important. Usually described as the process of looking for an explanation, it has been recognized as one of the most commonly used in our daily activities. Observing that Mr. Wilson’s right cuff is very shiny for five inches and the left one has a smooth patch near the elbow, Holmes assumes that he (Mr. Wilson) has done a considerable amount of writing lately. Given the symptoms A and B, a doctor suspects that the patient suffers from C. Karen knows that when it rains, the grass gets wet, and that the grass is wet right now; then, she suspects that it has rained.

متن کاملThe effect of shoulder abduction angles, shoulder dominance and non-dominance and external loading on shoulder muscles co-contraction ratio in overhead athletes and non-athletes
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of shoulder abduction angles, dominant and non-dominant arm and external loading on co-contraction ratio during arm abduction in scapular plane in overhead athletes and non-athletes. 10 swimmers, 10 handball players and 10 tennis players and ten non-athletes voluntarily participated in this study. Electromyography activity of shoulder muscles ...
متن کاملNon Omniscient Intensional Contextual Reasoning for Query-agents in P2P Systems
Given a de-centralized nature of the development of the Semantic Web, there will be an explosion in the number of ontologies in P2P systems. To integrate data from disparate ontologies, we must know the semantic correspondence between their elements. What we argue is the full epistemic independency of peer databases: they can change their ontology and/or extension of their knowledge independent...
متن کاملTHE EVALUATION OF SYMMETRIC RESTING SCAPULAR POSTURE AND SCAPULOHUMERAL RHYTHM RATIO BETWEEN DOMINANT AND NON-DOMINANT SHOULDERS IN ELDERLY SUBJECTS IN DIFFERENT HUMERAL ABDUCTION ANGLES
Background & Aims: Previous studies have stated that the scapulohumeral rhythm dysfunction can make a person prone to glenohumeral joint pathologies. The purpose of this study was to survey symmetric resting scapular posture and scapulohumeral rhythm ratio between dominant and non-dominant shoulders in elderly subjects in different humeral abduction angles. Materials & Methods: Thirty-five hea...
متن کاملNon-Omniscient Belief as Context-Based Resoning
This paper describes a general framework for the formalization of monotonic reasoning about belief in a multiagent environment. The agents* beliefs are modeled as logical theories. The reasoning about their beliefs is formalized in still another theory, which we call the theory of the computer. The framework is used to model non-omniscient belief and shown to have many advantages. For instance,...
